With winter just around the corner, many people are remarking on the stark contrast between well‑insulated and poorly insulated exterior walls. In this issue, Shandong Bangyuan Information Building Materials Co., Ltd., a leading manufacturer of exterior insulation systems, will show you how to properly install exterior wall insulation.

Modern buildings typically incorporate an external insulation layer on their façades to provide thermal insulation in winter and solar shading in summer, enhancing occupant comfort. So, how is exterior wall insulation installed? Many people may not be familiar with the process, so we’ll walk you through it shortly—hopefully, this will prove helpful.
I. Base Layer Cleaning
The substrate plays a decisive role in the adhesion of insulation boards. Prior to installation, conduct a surface‑preparation inspection: the bond strength must reach 0.45 MPa, and the moisture content must be less than 10%.
II. Mixing of Bonding Mortar
Mix the bonding and finishing mortar with water at a weight ratio of 4:1 until uniform. Allow it to stand for 5 minutes, then stir again before use, and proceed with the plastering work.
III. Installation of Insulation Boards
After the painting is completed, proceed with the installation of the polystyrene boards. First, mark a horizontal reference line, install aluminum brackets at the base, and then affix the boards in horizontal rows, ensuring that the minimum length of each board is no less than 200 mm and that the joints do not exceed 1.5 mm in width.
IV. Adhesion of Insulation Boards
First, use a notched trowel to apply the adhesive, then extrude adhesive beads about 5 cm wide, ensuring the coverage area exceeds the full panel size. When installing, do not tap the board with your hand; instead, use a tool to press and firmly bond it to the wall. Make sure no adhesive remains on the four edges of the EPS board, maintain a smooth surface, and keep the joints as narrow as possible.
V. Polishing
After the polystyrene boards have been laid, allow them to rest for one day before beginning the sanding process. Use a sanding board to smooth out any uneven areas, and once finished, thoroughly clean the substrate with a brush.
VI. Construction of the Reinforcement Layer
Once the polystyrene boards have been dried and cleaned, begin construction by first applying a full‑coat primer. Then embed the mesh fabric into the mortar; once the mesh is no longer visible, smooth the surface with a trowel. After drying, proceed with the finish coat. Following final setting of the mortar, mist the surface with water to prevent moisture loss and cracking. Sanding can commence after 6–8 hours.

Construction Procedures and Precautions for Rubber Powder–Polystyrene Granule Systems
1. The rubber powder–polystyrene bead insulation mortar consists of rubber powder and polystyrene beads, which are packaged separately in bags. When used, the two components are mixed with water according to a specified ratio (rubber powder to water: 1:2). This material should be mixed as needed and applied within 4 hours.
Characteristics and Key Construction Points of Polymer-Bonded Mortar
Many customers do not fully understand the characteristics and key construction considerations of polymer‑bonded mortar. In this issue, a polymer‑bonded mortar manufacturer from Shandong will share with you the distinctive features of our products.
What are the main properties of graphite polystyrene boards?
Graphite‑polystyrene insulation boards, EPS polystyrene boards, and mechanically bonded rock wool mortar composite panels. The hydrophobic rock wool board serves as the thermal insulation layer, which is anchored to the base wall using a combined adhesive‑and‑mechanical fastening system. It comprises a finishing coat made of skim coat mortar and fiberglass mesh reinforcement, topped with either a decorative mortar finish or a paint coating, forming an A‑class non‑combustible building energy‑saving insulation system.
